“A joke I’ve heard in China is that Americans claim to “speak” Chinese no matter how few words they understand, while Chinese claim to be unable to speak English no matter how many words they understand.” From this article. Seemed to be true in Japan as well, and a fairly high percentage of other places I’ve traveled.

sick chicken and contaminated egg
I don’t know where in the chain of causality these facts fall, but a) we have a healthcare spending problem in this country b) every other conversation I overhear in the Mud Box at American University is about the health conditions of the students. Just today I’ve heard about someone who has ocular migraines, someone who is deathly allergic to nuts, someone who lives in a bubble,...

Red Hook Lobster Pound Connecticut Lobster Roll, from their truck at the Eastern Market stop in DC.   Hard to believe we found that place years ago when it was just a couple running a storefront in Red Hook.

real estate agents
From Mortgage Servicing News: “Our system still embraces and relies on the traditional two-agent sales process, which always nets the highest price,” Jasgur said. If the buyer’s agent was really discharging his fiduciary duty to the buyer, wouldn’t a process with only a selling agent yield a higher price than one with two agents?  Or are they really just scamming all their buyers and...

design
When one’s first thought upon seeing a photo of a recently renovated modern kitchen with recycled quartz countertops and three stools at a bar is “I wonder if the countertops and number of stools are a nod to resource shortage and the accompanying drop in fertility rates…,” one has been reading definitively too many design articles.

IP
This morning, Krystal’s laptop wouldn’t connect to the wireless network at my mom’s place, but mine would.  It appeared that the problem was that hers was stuck in autoconfig and couldn’t get an IP, so I just assigned it a random IP relatively high in the 192.168.1.* range and used Google DNS et voila, Internet.   Makes you realize how fragile networking infrastructure is....

Some people use foo, bar, baz, etc.  Or military call signs - alfa, bravo, charlie.  Greek letters.  A former boss used to pepper his code with the phrase “I hate hippies.”  Well, in the SQL function for which I was just writing test code, my sample input, in perfectly legitimate fashion I might add, was three differently punctuated forms of Damage Inc.

iphone to android
One major reason I’d like to dump my iPhone: I’m really sick of how every few versions, iTunes will just dump my entire library and all of my settings, forcing me to reload all 100GB of music, re-set all my podcasts, re-sync my phone, re-associate my Google account for my contacts, and generally waste a lot of time.  Screw you, iTunes.
